Are You Going To Use That? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying DFY Content

Are you buying DFY content, but not using it?

It’s a well-known fact that people love buying DFY content. Whether it ever gets used or not is a different story. People (myself included) love to buy content, but they rarely put it to work for them. Just this morning I’ve already bought 3 different packs in 3 different niches because “I can do something with that!”

As a content vendor, every once in awhile I will remind you to only buy what you need and what you have an immediate use for. The rest of it will be there later when you need it. But I’m afraid I’m much better at preaching this than I am at practising it myself.

So, in order to figure out what I should buy and what I should leave for another day, I have a system now.

If I can’t answer these 5 questions before buying DFY content, I leave it on the table:

Question #1: Why am I buying this PLR

If you start thinking of DFY content purchases as an investment in your business, you’ll treat it like an investment. And that means you need to know what you’re going to do with it before you buy it.

The content needs to fit into your overall content and marketing plans or it’s just a waste of money. For example, if you’re in the self-care niche, content on fixing appliances is probably not a good fit for you. And the opposite is true as well – if your niche is fixing small appliances, then content on meditation is probably not going to do a thing for your audience.

While it’s always fun to explore new niches, most of the time we never get beyond the “hey that’s a great idea” stage and the DFY content we buy for future products rarely gets used.

Question #2: Does the seller have a good reputation?

Okay, time for a dose of harsh honesty… I love the DFY content market, but there are a lot of crappy sellers producing a lot of crappy content that’s not worth the cyberspace it takes up!

The best thing you can do is know who you are buying DFY content from!

Ask your friends for recommendations, check reviews, download free content when you can to get a feel for the style and whether it will fit with your business. (See the end of this post for some great free content from sellers I trust.)

Question #3: What’s in the package I’m buying?

Another way you can decide whether the content you’re looking at is worth buying, is to determine exactly what’s in the package.

Here’s what I mean…

I’m all for repurposing content, but sometimes content sellers can take this a little too far.

For example, a package might say that it contains 30 articles, but in reality it’s only 10 articles in three different formats.

Or, it could say that you’re getting 10 articles and an ebook or short report. But when you open it up, you find that the ebook is just all 10 articles combined into one PDF.

When it comes to low-content products like planner templates, you want to make sure that the content is in a format that you can use. So if you only work in PowerPoint, then a product that’s only Affinity or InDesign formats isn’t going to work for you.

A reputable seller will tell you this up front, so it’s another reason to make sure you know who you’re buying DFY content from before you hand over your money.

And that’s not to say that having the same content in multiple formats won’t work for you. Personally, it doesn’t work for me with written content because I tend to rewrite everything anyways, so I really only need one copy and then I’ll turn it into different formats myself.

But because I use several different formats for creating my low-content products, the more formats that are included in those packages, the more likely I am to purchase them.

Question #4: Is this in my budget?

It goes without saying that you should never go into debt to purchase DFY content.

The best thing you can do when it comes to buying DFY content is create a budget for yourself. If you know you only have a certain amount to spend on content each month, then you’re going to think twice before you buy.

Subscribing to memberships can be a great way of staying in budget and ensuring that you get a consistent supply of content every month.

My personal favourites are the monthly memberships from Piggy Makes Bank*, and the credits membership at PLR.me*. I’ve been a member of both of these for several years, and they are must-have investments for me every month.

Question #5: Can I work within the rights allowed?

Before you buy a DFY content package, make sure you read the license terms and if the seller doesn’t have them posted where you can see them, ASK!

There is no one definition of a PLR license and some sellers set their terms in ways that constrain you and disallow more uses than they allow.

Final Thoughts

I’m not trying to actively discourage you from buying DFY content because, let’s face it, I sell the stuff as well as buy it for my own use!

But, I want to you use what you buy, and I want to see you treat it as an investment, not a shiny object to hoard for later!

Buying DFY content that you can put to use immediately from reputable sellers you know and trust is the easiest way to get the most out of your purchases. And if you ask yourself these 5 questions before you plunk down your cash, you’ll be getting the best content you can for your business.
