Happy Thursday!
I’m just back from my walk and decided this morning, to head down to my favorite path along the river. I used to go down there early in the mornings to photograph the sunrise, but it’s not safe to do that any longer. Now, I wait until the café opens and I know there will be other people around, and while it’s not quite as peaceful as when I was the only one there waiting for the sun, it’s still a relaxing walk for me. Especially on days like today where it’s breezy, and not too hot. It reminds me of living at the beach, and I always feel better for having been.
Today was my third day in a row of going outside to walk, and now I feel like I’m starting to build the habit. We’ll see what happens on the first day it’s pouring down rain out there!
As for today’s subject line, it ties in with the featured partner pick for today, which is Ken Bluttman’s Crossword Puzzle Mastery. Years ago, around 2005 I think, I actually had a crossword puzzle niche site. It was one of the first niche sites I ever built, and I tried to keep it going for a couple of years before finally giving up. The software that was available back then for making puzzles wasn’t nearly as good as it is today, and it was hard to create puzzles that people actually wanted to solve. But I love crosswords, and logic puzzles, and any type of word puzzle really, so I’m really happy that Ken has finally created a decent crossword puzzle creator that gives you professional looking puzzles. Whether I’ll ever do another crossword niche site is still up in the air, but you can bet I’ll be creating some new puzzle books to publish before the end of the year.

My pick for today is Crossword Puzzle Mastery from Ken Bluttman. I’ve long been a fan of Ken’s software products, and this one is no different. In fact, I think this may be my favorite so far. As I mentioned in the opening I used to have a crossword puzzle site many years ago, but it was such a pain to create puzzles that people actually wanted to solve, that it didn’t last very long.
So when I had a chance to pick up Ken’s new software, I jumped on it. And so far I am very impressed. I’ve been through about half the videos so far, and as a crossword puzzle user myself, I love that these actually look like “real” crossword puzzles that you’d find in the big newspapers and published puzzle books.
The main offer is on sale for $37 and includes:
- Full training shows how crosswords are constructed and provides dynamic grids for assembling the puzzles
- American (New York Times) style and British/UK style
- Step by step over the shoulder video training
- Save feature allows saving puzzles – partially done to be completed later, and completed ones too of course.
- Huge database of clues – over 3,000,000 to select from
- Sophisticated search features and wildcard pattern matching make finding words that fit a breeze
- Great for both kid level and adult level puzzles
- Crossword puzzles are downloaded as PNG files for easy use in other programs
The one thing I will say is that if you’re expecting a “push button” instant puzzle creator, then this is probably not what you’re looking for. You will have to put some thought into the puzzle creation process, but the huge database of clues and the search features take some of the sting out of the work. And the payoff is in the fact that a lot of people will realize there’s work involved and not do a dang thing with this, so if you do get it and USE it, you’re ahead of the game when it comes to publishing crossword puzzle books!
